2014 Da$h for Ca$h Flathead shootout

A total of 35 teams took on this years Da$h for Ca$h Flathead shootout in what some described as a “gentle” breeze. With the entry list featuring the who’s who of flathead fishing, the competition was going to be tight and all teams would have to be on their A-game to take home the cash on offer. The forecast strong winds started right on cue as the briefing was conducted. It was a spectacular sight as the boats roared off to their prime locations looking for early fish to ease the nerves and make the most of the prime tides.

In the end it was the Brisbane River Fishing team that prevailed with a combined 5 fish limit of 284cm???, anchored by a 94cm Big Girl caught by Mathew Hubbard. The following is a report from Mathew reliving their day and the tactics employed.

“Well we knew we had to go to the ‘Pin knowing that the forecast gusty wind from the S S/E would kick in. As soon as we rocked up, we knew it was going to be a good day with a fish coming to the net on the second cast. This was quickly followed by a second fish the following cast. As the morning wore on we put 2 more fish in the boat including a 60cm flathead and a 50cm flathead. While Brad was releasing his 50cm fish, I felt a solid strike on my line. It felt like a flathead bite and I knew I was into a good fish with how solid the bite was. Originally I thought the fish had wrapped me around a stump as my line felt snagged. However when this “snag” started swimming I knew I was into a quality flathead. The next 15 mins was a really nervous time as I was only running 8lb main line and 12lb leader. I was hoping I had hooked the fish in the corner of the mouth. Finally after we had chased her half way round the Pin we were finally able to net the big girl. A few quick pics and a measure she was released and swam away like a trooper. I was using a 4 inch minnow in opening night colour”

The boys were elated with the win after following the advice of the Whyte brothers who were the winning team at the Flathead Classic by moving around and backing themselves and their ability. The guys pocketed $1000 cash along with $300 prize pack donated by Smash Tackle. Mathew also picked up a 50 litre esky as the Big Flathead prize and also took out the overall individual prize pack valued at $150.

In second place was Doug Burt’s Tackleworld with 270 points. The guys started around the Tipplers area and were catching fish straight away, however were concerned with the size. They moved to the area around Russell Island to find some bigger fish to build their points up. They used a range of techniques throughout the day to catch their fish.

Rounding out the podium was Team Renegade with 257 points. Father and son Steve and Lyndsey Lazarro fished the Crab Island area for the majority of the day to catch their fish before moving to the sand banks directly opposite the start line to catch the final couple of fish that boosted their total nicely.

A huge thankyou to Aykut Ahmet from Smash Tackle for his support of the event and to all the committee members who assisted with the organisation of the event. Only 11 months til the 2015 Classic, bring it on!
