2015 Top Gun Flathead shootout

he Top Gun Flathead is a 1 day shootout which continues to grow in stature, being an ideal hit out for those anglers who are serious about achieving a high position at the Classic in October!

Buy a top gun at auction or take them on with your own team! Your chance to fish with some of the top gun Flathead anglers from the Flathead Classic, we will be auctioning off a bunch of excellent anglers who have consistently done well over the years in the Classic. Have you been left wondering how the top anglers do it at the classic? Guys like Danny Sands, Nick Whyte  are consistent top 10 finishers at the classic and have a wealth of knowledge on the local waterways and chasing Flathead. This is your opportunity to learn from these guys and our other top guns and get yourself ready for the Great Northern Brewing Co. 2015 Flathead Classic.

If you are the successful bid at the auction you will team up with the top gun on their boat in a one day Flathead comp with cash prizes on August 16th. The 2 or 3 person team comp is open to all comers whether you choose to buy a top gun or fish with your mates.

Join the fun at the auction on August 13th (at the Flathead Classic launch Night) and bid to score a Top Gun for you or you and a mate to compete with on comp day August 16th. All anglers have a reserve price of $100 which covers entry to the comp.

Top Gun Angler Auction:

When: Flathead Classic Launch Night Thursday 13h August 2015

Where:  Runaway Bay Cricket Club

Time: ‘Sausage sizzle’ from 6.30, Meeting will start from 7.15pm. We finish the night off with the auction

Process: Top Gun Auction will see the top guns randomly drawn and then auctioned off throughout the evening. Starting bids are at $100 which covers team entry and lunch. All winning bids must be paid on the night. Remember 2 or 3 people can fish from one boat, so you can bid for a top gun solo or pool your $ with a mate to improve your chances.

Silent Auction Bids will be accepted to [email protected] up until 3pm on August 13th silent bids are made only with a firm commitment to honor (those who don’t will be named and shamed). Subject line of email must include: Auction Bid: Angler name. Email must include name and contact details to be valid and the bid total.

Top Guns

Christian Cross – Anyone looking for a comfy ride, then Christian is your man. This easy going bloke is a consistent to 10 finisher in the Flathead Classic. He is an all round angler who specialises in deepwater techniques. Whoever fishes with Christian will be in great hands and will certainly learn a lot from the experience. You may need to raid the kids piggy bank first though, he will generate a lot of interest!

Nick Whyte – Nick is an exceptional all round angler who’s knowledge of all things piscatorial will ensure that your day on the water will not only help your flathead fishing but your knowledge overall. For anyone wanting to learn more about getting the best out oftheir electronics, then Nick is your man. Nick specialises in deep water techniques, however is equally comfortable fishing edges or even trolling. His boat is decked out with the latest Lowrance technology and Nick specialises in on water tutorials for electronic equipment. Add to this his result in last years Classic which saw him finish top 5 overall  and part of the champion team.

George Sands – George won this event last year. This year steps up to take on the additional pressure to fish as one of the Top Guns. But don’t stress this cool, calm character is an extremely versatile angler who is equally home casting plastics or hard bodies at natural edges or chasing the Big girls in the deep. He is consistent performer in the Classic and his results speak for themselves, including numerous top 10 placing’s over the years. It may be his first year as a Top Gun, but he is far from a rookie! Don’t worry, you’ll be in good hands!

Doug Burt – A name synonomous with fishing on the Gold Coast and all round good guy, Dougy will provide a top notch day on the water. His knowledge of all things piscatorial is second to none, so even if the flathead aren’t on the chew you’ll have the opportunity to increase your fishing knowledge. Dougy is a very versatile angler who is adept at all techniques needed to catch the wily flathead. Strap yourselves in for a great day out!

Danny Sands –Danny’s CV also boasts a win in the Flathead Classic and numerous top 5 finishes. He is adept at trolling and plastics fishing, so versatility is his middle name! add to this a very comfy ride out on the water and you can expect Danny to a popular choice for anyone serious to learn about flathead fishing. Sell any old fishing tackle you have laying around, heck trade in your mother in law, but whatever you do bring a fat wallet to secure Danny, you won’t be disappointed!

Dean Lapham – Another angler from the Tackleworld stable, Dean has been fishing Gold Coast waters since he was 6 years old making his knowledge of the local waterways hard to match. Dean is adept with most fishing methods, however specialises in casting hardbodies and soft plastics at natural edges and deep water techniques. For anyone wanting to learn more about fly fishing then Dean is also very handy with the long wand and has been focussing a lot on this technique in recent times!

Top Gun Flathead Competition – Event Information

When: 16 August 2015

Where: Volunteer Marine Rescue Base Seaworld Drive, The Spit. Put in at the boat ramp at the spit enter VMR from the side gate near the beach.

Time: Registration from 6.00am, Briefing 6.30am, Field underway between 6.50-7.00am, Back to Base by 2.30pm.

Cost: $100 team of 2. $150 team of 3 includes lunch and a drink.

Comp Rules: It is a catch, photograph and release comp chasing best 5 legal Flathead, with the longest combined length (cm) taking home the booty. You will need a digital camera, blank SD card and a Brag Mat. The comp is Lure and Fly only and trolling is permitted. The ‘captain’/boat skipper is responsible for boat safety and ensure operation within the law including PFD’s.

The comp is a cash prize comp and will pay to third (lower if the auction generates enough money) A ‘prize’ will also be given for biggest Flathead. Boundaries are the same as the Flathead Classic power lines Russell Island to Nerang River

Prize Pool: Is dependent on the total # teams entered + the selling price of Top Gun anglers. 70% of entry money will be returned to the field. Conservatively a 30 boat field will have a $2000 prize pool but could be much more! Great Value Comp!
